Drawing inspiration from different musical cultures, Spanish down-tempo artist Alex Serra creates immersive sound journeys. Alex Serra is a traveling musician from the Mediterranean city of Barcelona. His solo career and especially his debut album In the Real World (2019), grew out of an inspiring four-year journey of self-discovery that began in 2012 and took him across Latin America and South Africa. The journey connected him with musicians from diverse musical traditions, infusing his music with revitalizing energy. After returning to Barcelona, he connected with dub producer Toti Arimany (Totidub) who helped him shape the sonic landscape of his debut album. Together, they crafted a collection of songs that transport listeners to other dimensions. Blending genres such as downtempo, dub, soul, and reggae, the music recreates the natural atmospheres and field recordings Alex captured during his travels, weaving them together with Afro-Latin electronic rhythms, soulful guitar work, and an exquisite use of dub textures and effects.
